What is EMDR?
EMDR, or Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, is a form of psychotherapy that has proven to be just as effective as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) in a clinical setting. It also takes much less time, sometimes 1/4 of the time it would take to overcome anxiety or depression with CBT. It is usually done by a therapist waving a wand, tapping on your legs, or doing anything to move your eyes back and forth while you focus on the memories that caused your mental trouble. This ‘processes’ the memories so they no longer have a strong impact on your thinking patterns.
How Does EMDR Change Your Thinking Patterns?
Our brains run on memories and experiences. Most thinking patterns come from experiences which caused us to feel a certain way. If you get bitten by a dog as a kid, your brain can be tricked to believe that all dogs are bad. But what if you could ‘blur’ that memory that caused you to think that way? Your brain may no longer associate dogs with that memory as it is less powerful. Instead, our brains can then go to other memories we have of dogs that are more positive when you see one. The most powerful memory always wins! And if that powerful memory is negative, then you can constantly reinforce it every time you see a dog.
This is why EMDR works for PTSD, anxiety, and depression. All of these mental troubles have causes; such as your first major panic attack or a bad breakup. Finding and processing the memories that cause you pain can help you break free and get the healing you deserve! You can learn more about how EMDR helps change thinking patterns on our videos page.
How Long Does EMDR Take?
Our brains are all so different. For some people, they could feel relief in one or two EMDR sessions. Some may take longer, even weeks. It all depends on how you react to EMDR and if you are focusing on the correct memories. Sometimes, finding the memories can be difficult. We go over more of that on our instructions page.
How does EMDR Work?
Many experts think that EMDR works by imitating the process that occurs during REM sleep. This is the brains natural healing process. Doing these same movements while awake uses the brains natural healing power to heal emotional disturbances
How to practice EMDR
In a clinical setting, a trained EMDR therapist may use several different methods to control your eye movements. A therapist may use their fingers, a light bar, or tap on your legs, as our eyes will naturally go towards the movement. There are also ‘tappers’ which vibrate in a patients hand to move the eyes. Bilateral sounds can also work.
With our free EMDR tool, you can do these same movements at home for free! This is a great option for those who cannot afford therapy. The tool has a dot that moves across the screen, while simultaneously producing a noise in each ear. To begin using this tool, please see our instructions page to learn more.
